A Beginners Guide to RC!
Regional Convention, aka RC, is one of the most exciting parts of BBYO. Not only do you get to bond with your chapter, but you get a chance to meet so many members of your region and build long-lasting friendships, too. While RC is a lot smaller than IC, BBYO’s International Convention can still be overwhelming, so here is a beginner's guide to having a successful and fun experience.
First things first: packing. When it comes to packing, it is important to remember not only chapter merch and spirit but to bring clothes for all types of weather. It may be freezing outside while the hotel ballroom is somewhere between a sauna and the surface of the sun. Plus, you’ll want options even though you will most likely just wear your roommate's clothes. In addition, snacks are an essential part of a successful RC. Pulling out a bag of Doritos or a box of Cheez-Its is the perfect way to bond with your roommates and keep up your energy for all the excitement of the convention.
A second big part of RC is the “Shuk”: a magical, slightly chaotic marketplace where chapters and regions sell their merchandise like they're starring in a pop-up clothing store. This is where you can buy everything from shirts and hoodies to hats and pins. The most important tip to remember is to bring cash to purchase clothes and to be ready to move around quickly. You’ll need real determination to score that one-of-a-kind tee in the “Shuk” because the lines can sometimes get out of control.
Next up is services. Services are a big part of RC, as the convention usually takes place over Shabbat. Services are a great way to connect as a community, reflect, and have fun. Whether you’re a service pro or a total newbie, there will be a session for you. Some follow a unique path like “Camp Shabbat” or “Hot Girl Torah”, and some are more traditional, but all make RC extra special.
Last but not least is the social part. You’ll meet more new people in one weekend than you thought possible, so embrace it! Break out of your comfort zone and try to get to know people outside your chapter. Enjoy a nice game of “Jewish Geography” (aka the game where you realize your mom’s college roommate’s son is your roommate's friend). Meeting people and swapping stories is part of what makes RC so fun, so don’t be shy. You may make a friend that will last a lifetime!
So there you have it. Pack like you’re prepping for all four seasons, show up to “Shuk” like you're ready for game day, join in the lively services, meet as many people as you can, and have the time of your life at RC!
